What Are You Working For?
Why do you get out of bed every morning?
It's a simple question.
But it has a habit of becoming more complicated the older we get.
In our twenties, the answer is usually obvious.
We're working to pay the bills. To build a career. To buy a house. To prove ourselves.
There's nothing wrong with that.
Survival comes first. Then ambition. Then success.
For many people, success is measured in Great British pounds.
For others, it's measured in promotions.
A bigger office. A better car. A more impressive job title.
Money and status are powerful motivators.
But they have one thing in common.
Neither lasts forever.
At some point, almost everyone reaches a crossroads. Usually in their forties, fifties or sixties. The question changes.
It is no longer...
"How much more can I earn?"
It becomes...
"What will I leave behind?"
That's a very different conversation.
Yesterday I spoke with a gentleman about some of the wealthiest families in the world. Not the overnight millionaires. Not the latest internet celebrity. Families whose wealth has survived generations.
Something interesting happens throughout their lives that creates a turning point.
Many spend the first part of their lives creating wealth. Then they spend the second part giving it away.
Not because they've suddenly stopped believing in capitalism.
Quite the opposite in fact.
They simply develop a stronger sense of responsibility.
Success becomes less about accumulation and more about contribution.
The question is no longer...
"What can I build for myself?"
It's...
"What can I leave behind for everyone else?"
To me, it's one of the biggest mindset shifts we ever experience.
Legacy replaces status. Contribution replaces recognition. Purpose replaces ego.
In the property industry, I see this turning point unfolding every day. Estate agents with thirty years of experience. Conveyancers who have seen every market imaginable. Mortgage intermediaries who've guided thousands of families through one of the biggest financial decisions of their lives.
Many are now asking the same question.
"Surely there has to be a better way?"
Not because they're tired. Because they care.
They've spent years watching buyers and sellers struggle through a system that too often works against them instead of for them.
Long delays. Poor communication. Unnecessary stress. Avoidable failures.
Experience gives you something that no artificial intelligence ever will.
Discernment. Perspective. Wisdom.
There no doubt technology will change our industry. But technology alone won't create a better housing market.
The people who choose to leave a legacy will. Especially those who've spent a lifetime learning what works... and what doesn't.
Perhaps that's one of the greatest responsibilities we have as we get older. To pass on what we've learned. To improve the systems we inherited. To leave our chosen profession stronger than we found it.
Because one day every one of us will step away from our careers.
The deeply uncomfortable question then becomes...
Will anyone notice we were there?
Yes, some people will leave behind money. Some will leave behind businesses. Some will strive to leave their name on a building.
But the real Mavericks will leave something far more valuable.
A better system. A better profession. A better future for those who follow.
That's what The Maverick Movement is about.
It's not simply about changing the British housing market. It's about creating a legacy that outlives every one of us.
If you've spent years in estate agency, conveyancing or mortgage advice, perhaps your greatest contribution isn't the next transaction.
Perhaps it's helping shape the next generation.
Because when history looks back on this industry, it won't remember who earned the biggest commission or who had the largest market share - those are all vanity metrics.
It will remember those who had the courage to make it better.
So I'll leave you with one final question.
What are you working for?
If your answer is beginning to sound more like legacy than money, we'd love to meet you.
Become part of The Maverick Movement and discover how experienced professionals are working together to build a faster, fairer and more transparent housing market for future generations.
