The Parts You've Gone Numb To.
The Mask Trap — Part 2 of 5
You can't put down a mask you've forgotten you're wearing.
Here's the tricky part about hiding pieces of yourself for years. Eventually you stop noticing you're doing it. The suppression stops feeling like suppression. It just feels like Tuesday.
I think this is the part people skip past too quickly. They hear "be authentic" and picture some dramatic unveiling, a single moment where the mask comes off and the real you steps out, blinking, into the light. That's not how it goes. Mostly it's smaller and duller than that. Mostly it's a slow forgetting.
The opinion you stopped having
Think about the last listing appointment where you disagreed with the seller's price. Did you say so, plainly, the way you'd say it to a friend? Or did you find the gentler version, the one with three qualifiers and an exit ramp built in?
Now think about how many times you've done that. Not the disagreement. The softening. If you can't remember, that's the point. It's become automatic. Your actual read on the market has quietly become a second draft, edited for palatability before it ever reaches your mouth.
That's one part gone numb. There are usually more.
"We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are."
A rough inventory
Try this, not as homework, just as noticing. Where do you go quiet that you didn't used to? Which version of you shows up at a listing appointment versus at dinner with someone who's known you fifteen years? What do you say yes to that you'd say no to if nobody was watching your face while you answered?
None of this requires shame, by the way. You didn't build this pattern out of weakness. You built it because somewhere back at the start, it kept you safe, kept the deal alive, kept the peace in a room that felt fragile. It worked. That's exactly why it's still running.
The problem isn't that you adapted. Adapting is just being alive around other people. The problem is when the adapting never stops, when there's no room left where the real opinion, the real energy, the real you gets to exist without translation.
So this week, just notice. Don't fix anything yet. Notice the moment you feel yourself dial down, soften, recalibrate. Notice it without judging it. That noticing is the whole first move, and it's bigger than it sounds.
Later today, we'll get into the specific beliefs underneath all this softening — the quiet sentences you've been repeating to yourself for years without ever saying them out loud.
