Competition with few rules is not a game you need to play.
Every day, somebody sends you a headline built to make you scroll. A new script. A new close. A better system. A new hack that guarantees the listing.
None of it is new. It's the same patch of dirt, just a fresh dose of fertiliser.
Here's what nobody in that world wants you to notice: you don't have to stay in the dirt because everyone in it is competing on the same three things — valuation, fee, and who can out-hustle who this quarter. That's a patch of weeds. It's crowded, it's slimy, and it rewards the agent who can shout the loudest, or with the deepest pockets, not the one who's actually worth trusting.
I've spent years watching good, decent agents get pulled into the weeds. Not because they lack skill. Because the whole industry is built to keep them dependent on somebody else's system — a script, a coach, a funnel — instead of standing on their own two feet.
Let's be blunt about it. Tom Ferry, Tom Panos, Ricky Carruth — the entire coaching-industrial complex runs on a simple mechanism: manufacture the incompetence, then sell the cure, forever. You never graduate. You just renew.
And it's not neutral. That model has already cost something real. Consumers have gotten sharper — they can smell a script from the first sentence, and every canned close erodes a little more trust in the whole profession. Meanwhile the agents running the scripts burn out chasing a system that was never built to make them obsolete. It was built to make them permanent customers. That's not a sustainable business. That's a subscription dressed up as a career.
The fix isn't a better script, or spraying potential clients with more information. It's thinking for yourself. Actually asking whether the advice you're following serves your client or your coach's renewal rate. Most agents have never been given permission to ask that question, let alone the tools to answer it.
There's another way to work. It's slower to build and it lasts longer once it's built. It has nothing to do with out-competing anyone — and everything to do with becoming someone a client doesn't need to be sold to.
I don't need your money. The Brand Within needs those with integrity and character to shine brighter.
That's the whole pitch, actually. Not urgency. Not a countdown clock. Just an invitation to a different kind of work — the kind where you get found by the right client because of who you are, not what you're willing to concede on price or the easy promises you offer.
Membership in The Brand Within isn't a masterclass you binge once and forget by Friday. It's a standing practice — the tools, the framework, and the company of other agents who've decided character is the actual asset, and everything else is noise. Who are you? Who are you to others? Who are you becoming? Those three questions, worked at consistently, do more for your business than any script ever will.
This isn't for everyone. Following someone else's playbook is easier in the short run — no thinking required, just renew and repeat. But if you're tired of being a coach's product instead of a client's trusted person, you already know you can fly. You haven't yet emerged from the industry cocoon.
Be worth knowing, not simply well known. — Chris
