Join "Cladding Matters" This Friday at 1pm: "Construction Collusions: A Plot to Shield Builders and Expose Residents"
Why not visit the world of building safety with us on "Cladding Matters," hosted by Gareth Wax, producer and director, alongside Hamish McLay, a conveyancing collaborator.
Our episode, "Construction Collusions: A Plot to Shield Builders and Expose Residents," will offer lively discussions highlighting the challenges and imbalances in building regulations that may favour builders over residents.
Our panel this week includes knowledgeable veteran Stephen Day, known for his thorough and detailed assessments as a resident of the renowned Royal Artillery Quays. We’re also privileged to have Silas J Lees and Zahrah Aullybocus return with their valuable insights on building safety.
We’re also pleased to have Wendy Gibson, a passionate advocate for first-time homebuyers, with us for our discussion. Many first-time buyers start their property journey with flats, making understanding building safety crucial. Wendy will help us tackle the crucial question: How can first-time buyers make risk-free decisions amidst these complex safety issues?
Amidst this backdrop, we find a puzzling scenario at Royal Artillery Quays, where, despite uniform construction across eight blocks of flats, the London Fire Brigade has issued an enforcement notice for one particular stairway. This curious case raises questions about consistency in safety enforcement and standards.
We’ll be asking Steve, who has a personal connection to the Quays, whether his stairway has received an enforcement notice or if he resides in a block deemed a fire risk. Will he have a fire-shaft or a means of escape in his block.
And the mysteries don’t stop there! An ill-conceived and unsafe standard of remediation, PAS9980, is strangely deemed acceptable by some builders, government officials, and alleged experts in the House of Lords. Yet, lenders and insurance companies consider this standard to be high-risk, potentially jeopardising both lives and the structural integrity of buildings. It appears that the lessons of Grenfell have yet to be learned by significant segments of the industry.
Together, our panel will examine the reasons behind the persistent tendency to prioritise the profit of builders over the safety of residents. What motivates the regulatory focus to seemingly favour those responsible for safety shortcomings? Our discussion will explore these questions, examining ways to determine whether safety regulations can be both just and effective.
Tune in live this Friday at 1pm for an engaging exploration of these vital issues. If you are unable to join live, a recording will be available to ensure that everyone has access to this important discussion. Engage with us as we discuss whether there will be reforms that prioritise the safety and rights of residents, aiming for a housing market where fairness is more than an ideal. It needs to be a reality.
