Beyond Cladding: What About the Inside of Our Buildings?

Friday 25th July at 1pm

The panels might be gone. The scaffolding removed. The exterior given a fresh tick of approval. Yet the problems for residents rarely end there.
This Friday, Cladding Matters shifts the focus from façades to floorplans, asking a timely question: what about the inside of our buildings?

It is easy to assume that once unsafe cladding is stripped and replaced, the job is done. Yet speak to those living in these buildings and you will often hear a very different story.

Poor sound insulation. Draughty windows. Irregular heating. Internal walls that warp or crack. These are not cosmetic gripes. They are the lingering reminders of a wider build quality crisis, and they can make daily life uncomfortable, unhealthy or even unsafe.

Too many developments that are now receiving cladding replacement still show signs of original construction shortcuts. Paper-thin walls that offer no privacy. Ventilation systems that barely function. Gaps around window fittings that let in cold air and noise.

These are not always problems that feature in surveyor reports or snagging lists. Yet they affect how people live and feel in their homes.
More troubling still is the reality that many builders and developers, supported in some cases by the very councils who should know better, are able to retain materials that are still considered unsafe by both mortgage providers and insurers.

The result is a building that appears remediated, yet remains blighted. Residents are left stuck in limbo.

This episode looks at how issues within the building matter just as much as what is on the outside. The hidden details. The day-to-day functionality.

There have been cases where the internal environment seems poorly suited to everyday living. In some developments, cost-cutting decisions may have played a part in ongoing discomfort. Could this be part of the discussion?

With Gareth Wax as our usual host, alongside Hamish McLay and Stephen Day, we will be reflecting on real concerns as Stephen brings real experiences from inside buildings that look the part on the outside, yet tell a very different story once you are through the door.

The cladding conversation needs to keep moving. That includes paying attention to what lies within.
