Yin & Yang of Estate Agency.

Yin & Yang of Estate Agency.

We have DISC profiling etc; so we might as well as have a look at this alternative.

Two complementary yet opposing forces in Chinese philosophy that are interconnected and interdependent and that together create all aspects of life.

Yin is, apparently, negative, dark, passive, nurturing, imaginative, contemplative and feminine!!!

Yang, by contrast, is positive, bright, energetic, fast, logical, loud and masculine.

Nothing contentious there then, apart from the hint of gender bias.

Except that it thankfully refers to energy rather than gender.

In practice, opposites have to co-exist. Without hot, we can know the concept of cold, but not the experience. How do we describe light without knowing dark? How do we imagine our agency "better than" if there is no other agency with which to compare?

It's important to acknowledge what self-proclaimed "best" agencies deem

Yin energy shows up in the world as wisdom, imagination, peacefulness, satisfaction, persistence, introversion, emotion and creative right-brain thought.

As an agent, most behaviour will manifest as the need to think before we speak, caution, or enjoying time alone.

Predominant energies are Groundedness, courageous, vulnerability, introspection, patience, deeper understanding of life, strong will.

Yang, in contrast, will show up as ambitious, extroverted, left-brained thought, spontaneous and impulsive.

Problems arise when we start insisting on one side of duality while rejecting the other.

It happens.

Estate agents/realtors in a client-facing role that are deemed to require the characteristics of Yang - extroverted, loud, social, quick, ambitious.

Just don't have them knocking on my door.

An imbalance of too much Yang or too much Yin has drawbacks.

Too much Yang and there is a risk of rigid, authoritarian behaviour. Too much Yin and we risk, perhaps, a loss of direction.

It even shows up in the design and colour of branding.

Based around the colours of the rainbow.

Red, orange, yellow: they symbolize Yang energy.

Blue, indigo and violet? Would symbolise Yin.

Right there in the middle is perfectly balanced energy of green.

My conclusion would be that the stereotypical realtor is encouraged to be one-dimensional Yang.

Which is a shame because every client will not be the same.

Probably explains why there is so much rejection in the listing presentation.

The vendor just didn't appreciate your qualities as a force of energy.

The myth doing the rounds in estate agency "training" is that agents should adapt their behavioural style to match that of the potential client.

Really?

Most have a hard enough time figuring out their own style without contemplating others.

Have they never heard of authenticity? Being transparently true to oneself. Regardless of whether that pushes people away, or bring them close.

Yin and Yang? - be authentic, or be fake. Just don't be somewhere in between and like most agents, blend in.

So, You decide.

It might be nothing more than traditional Chinese folk-lore.

Aversion to the number 4 and affinity for the Number 8.

White being associated with Death.

To name but two.

Human beings, just like you and me, assigning meaning to something intangible. It doesn't make it so.

Until it does.

Such, though, is life.
