Character Ahead of Competence. Always.

The Wake-Up Call · Part 3 of 5

Two articles of bad news. You've earned the answer. Here it is, and I warn you now: it's not a tactic. It's a reversal of everything the industry taught you to lead with.

Think about the last person you trusted with something that mattered. A doctor, a mechanic, the friend who held your keys and your secrets. Now ask yourself: did you choose them because they had the best credentials in town?

You didn't. You couldn't have. You never checked. You chose them because of who they were. Because something in how they showed up told you, before any evidence arrived, that you were safe in their hands. The credentials came later, if they came at all, as a comfortable afterthought.

That's the answer. That's the whole answer, and I'm going to spend the rest of this article making sure you don't dismiss it because it sounds soft.

Competence is the entry fee. Character is the deciding vote.

Every licensed agent in your market has competence, or at least the paperwork that claims it. Which means competence, for all its importance, has zero differentiating power. It's oxygen. Nobody chooses a restaurant because it has oxygen.

Character is different. Character is your values made visible. It's what you're willing to say that others won't, what you refuse to do that others do, how you treat the buyer who was never going to buy. It's whether the person on the other side of the kitchen table feels processed or seen. And unlike competence, character cannot be claimed. It can only be demonstrated, and people detect it intuitively, the way they detect a fake smile from across a room.

Sellers don't run tender processes on their emotions. They meet three agents, and two blur together within an hour, all polish and pipeline, and one lingers. The one who lingers gets the listing. Not because she pitched harder. Usually because she pitched less. She was too busy being a recognisable human being.

“But Chris, I have character”

You do. That's exactly my point, and it's why this series is a wake-up call rather than a eulogy. The 49% don't need to acquire something. They need to stop hiding something.

Because here's what replication marketing really costs you. Every templated post, every borrowed script, every “professional” veneer you pull over your actual personality is an act of concealment. You've been burying the only asset you own that nobody else in your market can offer. It's a bit like owning a vineyard and selling the grapes to buy someone else's wine.

Wilde gets quoted on coffee mugs so often we've stopped hearing him. But in a commodity market, that sentence is not a platitude. It's a business model. If twenty agents sound identical and one sounds unmistakably like herself, she hasn't just differentiated. She has exited the comparison entirely. You cannot comparison-shop a person. There is no second-cheapest version of you.

The uncomfortable homework

This is where I'm supposed to give you seven steps, and I won't, because the reversal has to happen in your thinking before it can happen in your marketing. So instead, homework. One question, and I'd ask you to answer it on paper, badly, in your worst handwriting, where nobody's grading you:

If your name and photo were removed from everything you published last year, would a single person in your market know it was you?

If the honest answer is no, you now know precisely why the phone was quiet. Not because you weren't good enough. Because you weren't you enough. There's real grief in that realisation, and I'd let yourself feel it, briefly. Then there's freedom in it, because the fix isn't out there in some funnel. It never was.

The Brand Within stands on this: don't compete, don't compare, don't conform. Be different. Be the favourite. Character already lives in you; it doesn't need installing, it needs uncovering.

Next time: what actually happens to an agent once they're implicitly trusted. The fees, the loyalty, the referrals, and the strange, wonderful moment when you realise the clients are choosing you, and you never had to close anybody. It's better than you think, and I have watched it happen too many times to call it luck.
